Letter from the Editor...

Photography by Patrick Demarchelier for US Harper's Bazaar Magazine| May 1998 ☆ #patrickdemarchelier#harpersbazaar #1998   I think it was 2010 when I first tried an Everybody Ballet class. From the moment I met EB’s founder, Isabel McMeekan, former First Soloist with The Royal Ballet, I was hooked. I emerged from one month of her classes feeling lighter, longer, stronger and more graceful and I knew immediately that at long last, I had found my exercise…for life. In addition to that, I fell in love with EB’s philosophy and the warm family it has built up over the years: the young, gifted students taught by Isabel, the cultured, committed and elegant pupils who regularly attend their West London and Royal Opera House classes and the inspiring extended world of dance, such as The Royal Opera House itself, and many of the most prestigious ballet schools that all come under the EB umbrella. Last year, Isabel and I decided it would be fun to create a quarterly online magazine for that EB family and thus, 'Talking Ballet', was born. It is here, that we can share with you all the beautiful images and talented people that inspire us as well as offering practical advice in the form of stretching correctly, taking up meditation or trying new healthy recipes in our 'Wellbeing' section.  The magazine is also the perfect place to share the wonderful experiences that our EB pupils enjoy at our twice-yearly ballet retreats and various workshops. We also promise to bring you regular interviews with everyone from the most established, experienced dancers to those up-and-coming talents that we believe will be shaping the world of ballet in the near future. Our Winter 2015 Talking Ballet edition includes an interview with the artist, Deborah Macmillan, widow of Kenneth Macmillan, one of the finest choreographers of our generation. Since her husband died in 1992, she has been responsible for overseeing his estate and every new production of his work. Deborah talks to us about this extraordinary legacy which has proved to be both a privilege and a constant challenge. Our 'A Day in the Life' section offers an insight into the working life of Johanna Adams Farley, Senior Stage Manager (Ballet), for The Royal Opera House. She shares her fascinating thoughts, memories and experiences of over 36 years in the business. Earlier this year, our EB pupils enjoyed another trip to Spain for our most recent bi-annual ballet retreat to Trasierra. Go to our 'EB Retreats' section to read more.    We also have lots of exciting master-classes and events coming up at the end of this term and early 2016. First up, is a master-class with Roberta Marquez (17th December 2015 7-8.30pm). The Brazilian-born, Russian-trained Royal Ballet Principal will be sharing her talent and knowledge with our EB pupils – sign up now by emailing Isabel. We are also very excited to offer you the opportunity to see Royal Ballet Principal, Zenaida Yanowski, in rehearsals for Swan Lake with a young rising star of The Royal Ballet who will be playing Odette. The rehearsal takes place on 18th February 2016 7-8.30pm - sign up nice and early to avoid missing out on this unique opportunity. And finally, EB is delighted to announce an intimate evening with Leanne Benjamin (26th January 2016). The former Royal Ballet Principal will be sharing her experiences and memories of a seriously stellar career as well as contemplating what it takes to be a woman at the top of her game. That’s all for now – we hope you enjoy everything Talking Ballet has to offer this season. Sara Parker Bowles, Editor Winter 2015
